New lease of life for Whitby tennis courts
Work to bring Whitby West Cliff’s outdoor tennis courts back into public use will get underway next week.
As part of our £730,000 investment in public realm improvements in Whitby, the tennis courts located behind Whitby Leisure Centre will be given a new lease of life with new playing surfaces, nets, perimeter fencing and associated landscaping.
The investment is part of phase two of our public realm improvement scheme, ‘Project Sunshine’. It is also a priority project within our tennis strategy to increase the borough’s provision of better facilities for playing tennis.
Fosse Contracts will undertake the Whitby redevelopment, which is due to be finished by spring 2023.
We hope to make improvements to the neighbouring multi-use games area (MUGA) after the work on the tennis courts has been completed.
Councillor Tony Randerson, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said:
"High quality public realm facilities can help to provide social, economic and environmental benefits.
"In the case of our substantial investment in the tennis courts in Whitby, it will provide a safe and well equipped space for local residents and visitors of all ages to be active and connect through sport and help to promote pride in the community."
