Search on for donkeys and deckchairs for the borough’s beaches

An appeal has begun to find someone to run donkey rides in three towns on the North Yorkshire coast.

Over the years, the animals have been a regular feature on the beaches of Filey, Whitby and Scarborough and are almost as iconic as buckets, spades and ice cream.

We are inviting bids from donkey owners to offer rides at the following locations:

Helping young people get a foot on the career ladder

Young people from across the borough – who’ve previously struggled to secure work – have been given a helping hand to get on the career ladder.

We created 16 new roles and recruited 14 people to them after signing up to a national programme called Kickstart.

The scheme was launched in 2020 and was designed to help people aged 16 to 24 gain real-world job experience and training.

It was open to people accessing universal credit and in danger of long-term unemployment.

Masterplan for Scarborough moves forward with proposal for hotel

Plans for a £15 million investment in Scarborough’s North Bay will be presented to councillors at a meeting of cabinet next week (26 July).

Yorkshire businessman Nick Thomas MBE has put forward plans for a hotel and has offered to buy the site of the former indoor swimming pool in Ryndle Crescent.

At their meeting, councillors will be asked to approve the sale of the land to enable the redevelopment plans to progress to the next stage.

All aboard for the return of Scarborough Seafest

Scarborough’s maritime weekend extravaganza, Seafest, is all set to return this summer for the 22nd time to entertain and tickle the taste buds of festival goers from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July.

At the heart of the festival on West Pier will be the popular live music and beer marquee in partnership with Great Yorkshire Brewery, and the Scarborough Hospitality Association Seafest Food Theatre with live cooking demonstrations.

Arrangements for horse fair at Seamer

Together with North Yorkshire Police and our other partners, we have finalised arrangements for this year’s horse fair at Seamer, near Scarborough, on Friday 15 July.

The horse fair site is the same field as used for previous fairs, located just off the B1261 between Seamer and Crossgates, The horse fair is returning to Seamer this month after cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The site will be open to travellers attending the horse fair from 6am on Tuesday 12 July until 6pm on Friday 15 July.

Cutting fleet vehicle emissions with new fuel trials and electric bin wagon

What’s thought to be the biggest trial of an emissions-cutting new fuel in Yorkshire is underway in the borough of Scarborough.

We have started using a fuel made from waste oils and fats.  

It’s being used instead of traditional diesel to power more than half of our vehicles based at the Dean Road depot.

They range from large bin wagons to ride-on lawn mowers.

The new fuel – called hydrotreated vegetable oil - or HVO – will drastically reduce carbon emissions from our fleet by as much as 90 per cent in some cases.

Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay

Next week will see the eagerly anticipated arrival of the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in the borough of Scarborough.

On Wednesday 13 July, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Scarborough, Fylingthorpe, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby during its 25-day tour of England in the final countdown to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Cinder Track scheme benefits school projects

Green fingered school children in Scarborough are getting the chance to improve their school gardens and green spaces thanks to the Cinder Track restoration scheme.

The £490,000 restoration scheme to provide much needed improvement to the southern end of the Cinder Track - a popular traffic-free route between Scarborough and Whitby – includes widening of the track in places.

Revamped toilets at Scarborough South Bay

After our investment of more than £500,000, people can benefit from a modern, pleasant and accessible public toilet experience when visiting Scarborough South Bay.

The old toilets at the bottom of St Nicholas Gardens on Foreshore Road were in need of significant investment, modernisation and additional functionality to meet the needs of today’s users and be accessible to all.

Scarborough triumphs at AFD national event

More than 100,000 people from all over the country descended on the Yorkshire coast town of Scarborough today (Saturday 25 June) to celebrate the very best of the military at this year’s prestigious Armed Forces Day national event.

Under blue skies, crowds lined pavements, the beach, cliff tops and balconies to be entertained by a dazzling spectacle of the very best displays and activities on the water, on land and in the skies.
