Open conversations about Building a Better Borough

We will be hosting three open conversation events as part of the comprehensive and widespread public consultation on our new Corporate Plan for Building a Better Borough.

The events, which are part of our ‘Your Borough, Your Say’ consultation, will be held on Monday 17 February, 2pm to 4pm at the Evron Centre, Filey, on Tuesday 18 February, 2pm to 4pm at The Street, Scarborough and on Wednesday 19 February, 2pm to 4pm at the Coliseum Centre, Whitby.

Plans proposed for investment in public toilets

On 11 February, our Cabinet will be asked to review and agree a new draft strategy, which sets out exciting plans to invest £1.1m during the next two years in improving public toilets throughout the borough, with a further £700,000 proposed for upgrades and refurbishment by 2030.

Cllr Steve Siddons, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, has released the following statement in relation to the former Futurist/St Nicholas Street site project review:

"A key public concern in the Scarborough area elections last May was the 2014 decision and plans for the former Futurist to St Nicholas Street site. As Leader, I was tasked by the electorate with checking the process used had been sound and that the economic implications for the borough were thoroughly researched and understood.

Plan to launch real Living Wage campaign

We're proposing to launch a real Living Wage campaign to help maximise the earning potential of people living and working in the Borough of Scarborough.

The proposed campaign aims to contribute to the inclusive growth strategy outlined in our new Building a Better Borough programme and if adopted, would see a collaborative approach with local businesses to stimulate wealth generation in the area.

Towns Fund bids for Whitby and Scarborough

Two new partnerships, one for Whitby and one for Scarborough, have been launched and tasked with putting together bids for a share of the Government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund.

The partnerships will see us collaborate closely with residents and businesses in Whitby and Scarborough about what they want to see included in the bid for their town.

Footbridge transported to Whitby East Pier

A new footbridge, constructed specifically to link Whitby’s East Pier to its pier extension, was transported to the East Pier yesterday, Thursday 23 January.

The footbridge, which weighs 9 tonnes and is 27 metres long, was transferred by barge from the town’s Endeavour Wharf car park, where it had been located since November, to the East Pier and craned onto the pier.

Cinder Track improvement works start at Whitby end

Major improvement works to the Whitby to Hawsker end of the Cinder Track on the North Yorkshire coast get underway today.

Restoration of the permissive route, which follows the former Scarborough to Whitby railway line, will vastly improve users’ access and experience, promote environmentally sustainable methods of travel, facilitate active lifestyles and help to support wildlife.
