Festival fundraising for Fishermen’s Mission

Following the success of Whitby’s first ever Fish and Ships Festival held last month, event organisers today presented a cheque for £1451.46 to the Fishermen’s Mission.

Funds were raised for the charity during the festival weekend of 18 to 19 May by holding a fish auction with local businesses, a fish sale to the public and collection box donations from people enjoying the festival.

New Mayor and Deputy Mayor take up office

Cllr Hazel Lynskey was today formally elected as Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough for the 2019 to 2020 mayoral year at our annual Full Council meeting. She took over from Cllr Joe Plant who has been the Mayor since May 2018.

At the same meeting, Cllr Roberta Swiers was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough.

Today marks the second time Cllr Lynskey has taken up the mayoral office, having previously held the role from 2010 to 2011. In the past she has also been Deputy Mayoress and Mayoress to Honorary Alderman Sheila Kettlewell.

Leader calls for rethink on homeless support funding

Land art shortlisted in Tour de Yorkshire competition

Tour de Yorkshire organisers Welcome to Yorkshire have announced that voting is now open for the race’s 2019 Land Art Competition.

Spectacular land art creations could be seen animating the route over the four days of action between 2 to 5 May, and 12 pieces have now been shortlisted to go head-to-head in a public vote.

Grant for 3G community football pitch in Whitby

Some good news has been announced for community sport in the Whitby District. Eskdale School have been awarded a grant from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation, to install a new floodlit third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP).

Launch of Borough Eco Champions Scheme

A new scheme was launched yesterday to recognise and reward the good work taking place across the Borough of Scarborough by children and young people in supporting the principles of environmental sustainability and encourage them to be environmental ambassadors of the future.

Our Eco Champions Scheme, which is aimed at schools, colleges, youth organisations and groups, will run from September to June each year and will encourage young people to focus on sustainability issues such as recycling, littering and reducing the use of single use plastics.

The superstar rock trio headline Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Friday 14 June for what is an exclusive warm-up show before the band embarks on a series of headline appearances at festivals across Europe including the Isle of Wight, Deichbrand, Lollapalooza and Indiependence.

New café venture at Scarborough Open Air Theatre

Our venues and events team has launched its latest venture - a new café located at Scarborough Open Air Theatre - with an official opening by the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Joe Plant.

The Venue Café Bar, which is directly opposite North Bay Railway’s ticket office and shop and close to Peasholm Park, is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm and offers a range of hot and cold meals including breakfast and pizzas, a large selection of ice cream flavours by Kelly’s of Cornwall and coffee supplied by The Baytown Coffee Company, based in Hawsker.

Dying Matters event at Woodlands Crematorium

Our Bereavements Services team will be holding an open day and information event at Woodlands Crematorium on Saturday 18 May between 10.00am and 4.00pm, which aims to get people talking more openly about dying, death and bereavement and find out what end of life options are available to them and their loved ones. It will also give people an opportunity to see the recently improved facilities at the crematorium.
