Plea to residents, visitors and businesses

In response to the large number of residents and visitors visiting seafront areas on the Yorkshire coast yesterday (21 March) and hospitality businesses remaining open, Cllr Liz Colling, Deputy Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, has issued the following plea:

"I appreciate this is a very difficult time for everyone but we must all take our collective responsibility to protect each other seriously and adhere to the strict Government guidance on social distancing and the closure of bars, restaurants and cafés.

BID company urged to defer collection of levy

We have written to the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District (BID) company calling on it to join the collective effort to support local businesses facing hardship during the coronavirus outbreak.

Cllr Liz Colling, Deputy Leader, said:

"In addition to the information we published yesterday about how we are administering the Government’s package of business support measures at a local level, we have also urged the Yorkshire Coast BID company to demonstrate their support by deferring collection of the levy at this exceptional time.

We are working hard to deliver services and support communities throughout the borough during the coronavirus outbreak and are asking people to help us continue doing so by using online services as much as possible.

We are adapting how we operate to take account for social distancing and the impact of school closures so that we can prioritise essential services and support those most in need.

DBID vote investigation report

An independent report into our handling of a ballot to decide a Destination Business Improvement District (DBID) for the Yorkshire coast was “carried out correctly”.

That’s the conclusion of an inquiry by the UK’s top elections expert whose findings will be presented to a meeting of our Audit Committee on 19 March.

Peter Stanyon, Chief Executive of the Association of Electoral Administrators, found the regulations were followed correctly but says he believes the overall ballot process wasn’t without issue.

Nile Rodgers & CHIC at Open Air Theatre

The legendary hit-makers will play a headline show at Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Friday 21 August.

Completion of Spa Slope Stabilisation Scheme

A celebration to mark the completion of a massive £16 million scheme on the Yorkshire coast to stabilise the cliff between Scarborough Spa and the Esplanade on Scarborough’s South Cliff took place today.

The complex engineering scheme, project managed by Royal HaskoningDHV, and carried out by contractor, Balfour Beatty, on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council, has resulted in the protection of 380 homes and 38 key businesses with a combined value of £114m.

Public drop in sessions for Building a Better Borough

Our comprehensive Building a Better Borough consultation, ‘Your Borough, Your Say’, continues with six roadshow style events throughout the borough in the coming weeks.

People will be able drop by to have a short informal chat with council representatives about how Building a Better Borough can be achieved and let the council know about the things that matter the most to them, at the following events:

4 March, Filey Library: 10.00am until 1.00pm and 1.30pm – 5.00pm

7 March, Brunswick Centre, Scarborough: 10.00am – 4.00pm

Whitby views sought on Towns Fund bid

Following the announcement in January of a new partnership in Whitby to develop a bid for a share of the Government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund, there will be an opportunity for local residents and businesses to contribute their views and opinions towards a draft blueprint for Whitby at a public drop-in event on Saturday 7 March at The Coliseum Centre on Victoria Place, between 10.30am and 4.30pm.
