Scarborough triumphs at AFD national event

More than 100,000 people from all over the country descended on the Yorkshire coast town of Scarborough today (Saturday 25 June) to celebrate the very best of the military at this year’s prestigious Armed Forces Day national event.

Under blue skies, crowds lined pavements, the beach, cliff tops and balconies to be entertained by a dazzling spectacle of the very best displays and activities on the water, on land and in the skies.

Limited edition coin to mark AFD national event

We have joined forces with Heroes Welcome to produce a special limited edition coin to commemorate Scarborough hosting the Armed Forces Day national event on Saturday 25 June and to say thank you to those who serve.

Heroes Welcome is a national scheme, which was conceived in Scarborough by veteran John Senior MBE TD. It encourages businesses and communities to give a warm welcome, service up grade, special acknowledgement or discount to armed forces personnel and their families.

Trio of Royal Navy ships to feature in Armed Forces Day national event

The Royal Navy has confirmed that three of its ships will feature in this year’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in Scarborough.

HMS Brocklesby will be the first to be visible off South Bay on Monday morning (20 June) when she takes part in the official flag raising ceremony.

Brocklesby is a Mine Counter Measures Vessel (MCMV) and her primary purpose is to seek out and neutralise enemy mines.

The vessel uses Sonar technology and a combination of highly trained mine clearance divers and the Seafox unmanned underwater vehicle. 

Flag flying events to start Armed Forces Day week

People throughout the borough are invited to show their respect for the UK Armed Forces at flag raising ceremonies involving the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force in Filey, Scarborough and Whitby next week.

The ceremonies will take place on the morning of Monday 20 June to mark the start of the Armed Forces Day week of celebrations, which culminates in the Armed Forces Day national event in Scarborough on Saturday 25 June.

There will be a special delivery of the ‘Armed Forces Day show your support’ flags to Scarborough via sea, land and air.

Scarborough’s celebration of the nation’s Armed Forces – the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force (RAF), will be a dazzling spectacle of the very best displays and activities on the water, on land and in the skies.

Special Wold Top Brewery beer bottle for AFDNE

The enterprising beer aficionados at Wold Top Brewery have partnered with us to produce a special edition of their popular Wold Gold beer, designed to celebrate this year’s Armed Forces Day national event in Scarborough.

The limited edition labelled bottle will be presented to serving personnel and veterans taking part in the main parade on Saturday 25 June. The bottle label design complements the official artwork for the national event, which is being used on the commemorative programme and on other promotional channels.

False claims about plans for West Pier redevelopment dismissed as “nonsense”

Claims by a local businessman and campaigners that the council has misled government to secure money to transform Scarborough’s West Pier have been dismissed as “complete nonsense” by political leaders.

Ten business cases for Town Deal projects in Scarborough (and also in Whitby) have been approved by government and £37.3 million to pay for them has been released.

Redeveloping West Pier is just one of the schemes.

Inspections to check memorial stones for stability

In July we will begin a sensitive audit of memorial stones in our three cemeteries to check they are stable and don’t pose a safety risk to people that visit the cemeteries and the staff that work in them.

All types of memorials higher than 18 inches (approximately 45.5cm) will be checked for stability at Dean Road & Manor Road and Woodlands cemeteries in Scarborough and Larpool cemetery in Whitby.

The inspections will be carried out on our behalf by a qualified contractor.
