A new extension is to be built at Scarborough’s Woodlands Crematorium to improve the bereavement services it provides to people from across the borough.

Woodlands hosts hundreds of funeral services and cremations each year and is the borough’s only council owned and managed crematorium.

Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride routes announced

General entries are now open for the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride 2018; the iconic and infamously tough legacy sportive of the Grand Départ 2014. Taking place on Sunday 6 May from Woodhouse Moore in Leeds and finishing on The Headrow, six thousand amateur cyclists will have the chance to ride key sections of the Tour de Yorkshire's final stage just hours before the pros.

Organisers have seen record numbers of entries at the 'Mystery Location' price, with a quarter of the places taken before the location of the ride was announced to be in Leeds.

Leader reaction to news of Boulby mine job losses

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, has reacted to the news of the potential job losses at Boulby mine by issuing the following statement:

"Yesterday’s news about the expected job losses at Boulby mine is a huge blow for the Yorkshire coast community, including the many employees and their families living in the Whitby area, who are now, understandably, very anxious about their future.

"We will do anything we can to assist those affected and we are mobilising our support plans with immediate effect.

Independent rep required for Audit Committee

Scarborough Borough Council is looking to recruit a new independent representative to join its Audit Committee.

The role involves providing challenge, support and advice to one of the authority’s most important committees covering the areas of finance, audit and fraud. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate high standards of corporate governance at all times, including understanding the role played by the Audit Committee in helping to address the key financial and other risks facing the council.

Tour de Yorkshire information roadshows

Welcome to Yorkshire has unveiled the first set of Tour de Yorkshire roadshows which will take place across the county in the run up to this year's races.

The roadshows give a detailed view of the route and provide local residents, businesses and community groups with all the information they need to embrace the fourth edition.

Vehicle restriction on Cinder Track near Ravenscar

Motor vehicle access is being restricted on a section of the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line, just north of Ravenscar, due to a small landslip.

The temporary restriction of motor vehicles applies to the section of the track at OS grid reference NZ 962 024 and takes effect from today, Thursday 4 January.

Locally known as the Cinder Track, the old railway line is a popular route for walkers, horse riders and cyclists and in certain parts is used by motor vehicles to access private properties and land.

Blue bin recycling reminder

Scarborough Borough Council wants everyone to be fantastic at their recycling to help reduce the amount of incorrect items entering the recycling process.

Following an increase in the number of carrier bags, nappies, food waste and other incorrect items being added to the blue bin, the council would like to encourage everyone to take a fresh look at their recycling, particularly plastic items, and check they are only putting the correct items in their blue bins.

Selective Licensing reminder to landlords

Scarborough Borough Council is reminding landlords in parts of Scarborough’s Castle and North Bay wards that time is running out to submit an application to the Selective Licensing scheme.

The scheme, which became compulsory earlier this year for privately rented properties in large parts of the two wards, requires landlords of those properties to apply to the council for a licence. Landlords have until midnight on Sunday 31 December to apply for a licence otherwise they will face a £100 penalty charge for late application.
