High hedges

On 1 April the single new council for North Yorkshire launched replacing Scarborough Borough Council and other local authorites in North Yorkshire.

To find your Councillor or to view minutes, meetings and agendas please visit the North Yorkshire Council website.

We can help settle disputes between neighbours regarding the height of certain types of hedgerows.

The high hedges legislation is limited to evergreen hedges higher than two metres that cause a severe loss of light to a residential property.

Over the garden hedge provides guidance on how to settle your hedge differences without involving the local authority.

  • We will not take action unless you submit the appropriate information, application and fee.
  • We cannot act as a mediator between neighbours regarding disputes concerning height of hedges. We will only get involved when it is clear that all reasonable steps have been taken to reslove the dispute.
  • We will adjudicate on complaints in accordance with guidance from the Department of Communities and Local Government.

If you have exausted all your options, please see the following information about bringing your complaint to us.
