Housing Benefit/Local Support for Council Tax is normally paid from the Monday following the date your application form is received so do not delay in submitting your form.
From the 1 April 2016 Housing Benefit can only be backdated for a maximum of one month prior to the date the request for backdated benefit is received. A request for backdated Housing Benefit must be made in writing. Backdated Housing Benefit can only be allowed if the local council is satisfied that continuous “good cause” has been shown for having failed to claim earlier.
Each case is looked at on its own merit and this means you should provide all the relevant information in support of your request. You must tell us as soon as possible if you want to request backdating.
You can make a backdating request by letter, on the benefit application form under the heading “Other Information”, or contact us for a backdating request form.
From the 1 April 2021 Local Support for Council Tax can only be backdated to a maximum of the beginning of the previous financial year. If you want to request backdated Local Support for Council Tax please contact us on 01723 232372 or firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss this.
Pension age customers
If you are of pension age then backdating will be automatically considered for a maximum of 3 months prior to the date of application but only back to the day you reached pension credit age or the day you became liable for rent if this is later.
