Cemeteries and crematorium

On 1 April the single new council for North Yorkshire launched replacing Scarborough Borough Council and other local authorites in North Yorkshire.

To find your Councillor or to view minutes, meetings and agendas please visit the North Yorkshire Council website.
We operate Woodlands Crematorium which was opened in 1961. The crematorium carries out approximately 1200 cremations a year and offers a range of services.
A chapel for services is provided and the grounds are laid out as a garden of remembrance.

Construction works have started at Woodlands Crematorium to extend and improve the facilities at the site.  This has required the installation of temporary waiting facilities for funeral attendees.  Our contractors have been asked to keep disruption to a minimum but we’d like to apologise, in advance, for any inconvenience the works cause.

Opening times

The crematorium office is open Monday to Friday 9:00am – 4:30pm.

The grounds are open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset.

Service times

Service times are held between 9:00am – 3:00pm Monday to Friday (60 minute slot with a 45 minute service or a 40 minute slot with 25 minute service).

Parking

We have limited parking on site, but there is unrestricted on-street parking outside the grounds.

Memorials

There are various memorials available at the crematorium as a lasting tribute; these include bronze plaques within a flower bed, in front of a tree or positioned on the stone kerb within the grounds. Granite Blocks (with a small posy vase incorporated). Granite disc plaques which are installed on large granite mushrooms.  Arboria timber wall plaques located in the Remembrance Chapel which can be personalised to include an enamel photograph or a hand engraved motif.  Or an entry in our Book of Remembrance.

Book of remembrance

The Book of Remembrance provides a beautiful and lasting memorial to those who have been cremated at Woodlands Crematorium. The book consists of eight volumes, each volume displayed in the remembrance chapel. The pages are turned daily to reflect the current date, so that a lasting record appears at each anniversary date according to the date chosen. The date under which the entry appears is normally the date of death. However, any date may be chosen like a birthday or wedding anniversary.

Each inscription can consist of up to eight lines, with the minimum being a two line entry. Inscriptions can be decorated by a floral motif, badges or coat of arms, for example, a coat of arms, military, club or society badge.  If you would like a special motif, please include a detailed drawing or photo the studio can work from. Please talk through the choices available with the crematorium staff.

You can view the book of remembrance online.

Memorial cards

Everyone arranging an entry in the book of remembrance will receive a complimentary memorial card bearing the same inscription.  It is regretted that this cannot include any requested motif unless an additional fee is included.  Additional cards can be ordered for friends and relatives.

Music and media

Your own choice of music can often play an important part in a funeral. We offer a digitised music system which enriches the quality of the services offered to the bereaved.

Requests need to be made at least 48 hours (but ideally 72 hours) before the date of the service,

Baby garden

There is a recognised garden dedicated to the memory of our babies, where parents, relatives and friends may enjoy tranquil surroundings to remember their loved ones.
