Food labelling and composition

On 1 April the single new council for North Yorkshire launched replacing Scarborough Borough Council and other local authorites in North Yorkshire.

To find your Councillor or to view minutes, meetings and agendas please visit the North Yorkshire Council website.

Scarborough Borough Council is responsible for ensuring food safety within the Borough and therefore will investigate complaints referring to food being sold past "Use By" dates and food which is unfit due to contamination or deterioration.

North Yorkshire County Council trading standards department are responsible for food labelling and composition of food, including Best Before dates. More information on food labelling and composition can be found on GOV.UK.

Use-by dates

Use By dates are usually given to food that goes off quickly, such as milk, soft cheese, ready-prepared salads and smoked fish. It's also important to follow any storage instructions given on food labels, as the "Use By" date is only valid if stored as per manufacturers guidelines.

Foods that have a 'use by' date must be removed from sale/not used once that date has passed. Even if it looks and smells fine, using it after this date could put your health or the health of customers at risk and cause food poisoning. It is illegal to offer food for sale which is past its 'Use By' date.
