Asylum seekers - advice and support
Provision of temporary accommodation, meals and other advice and
support for asylum seekers i.e. those waiting for an application
for refugee status to be assessed by the government.
Scarborough Borough Council does not have any recognised support
services for asylum seekers.
An asylum seeker is someone who comes to the UK, often fleeing
persecution, torture or war, and applies for refugee status. Until
refugee status is granted, the person remains an asylum seeker.
Asylum seekers often encounter homelessness and face difficulty in
obtaining accommodation.
The UK Border Agency Section of the Immigration and
Nationality Directorate (Home Office)deals with asylum applications
(see link below).
While applications are being considered, another part of the
Home Office called the National Asylum Support Service (NASS)
provides support, accommodation and financial support. You can
contact them via the Telephone Enquiry Bureau on 0845 6021739 from
9:00am to 9:00pm Monday to Friday.
