Derelict properties - public safety

The local authority will consider the compulsory purchase of long-term abandoned and vacant properties.

2 Hanover Road, ScarboroughOnce abandoned, properties can be subject to a downward spiral of vandalism, fire setting, drug use and other community related problems.  The ultimate responsibility for keeping a property secure lies with the property owner.  Should the owner fail to fulfil his responsibility in respect of providing and maintaining security then the council can intervene.  Wherever possible we will first of all give the owner an opportunity to do the work themselves.

The Building Standards Consultancy can implement a Section 29 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 to secure the property and the Development Control office can  provide advice and support to the owners of empty properties with the aim of returning the properties to use.
