Lifebelts

The authoritiy provides public safety equipment at harbours and along the coastline. This public safety equipment includes lifebelts and emergency telephones.


A lifebelt in WhitbyThe provision of lifebelts within the Borough of Scarborough is split between  Port Services and the Outdoor Leisure Section of Leisure Services.

Port Services supervise lifebelts located around the harbour areas of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey Coble Landing.

 

The Outdoor Leisure Section of Leisure Services looks after lifebelts located along the coastline at Staithes, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Boggle Hole, Scarborough North bay, Marine drive,Scarborough South Bay, Cayton Bay, Filey Brigg, Filey, Primrose Valley, Amtree Park (former Butlins Holiday Camp), Hunmanby Gap and Reighton Gap.

 

Lifebelts around the rivers are the responsibility of the Environment Agency

It is not possible to provide a lifeguard service on every area of open water at all times within the borough, therefore lifebelts are in place as a throw/ reach piece of rescue equipment. To use remove the belt from its housing, hold the end of the rope in one hand and throw the lifebelt with the other. You should aim to throw it past the person in difficulty then pull it back so that they can grab hold.

 

YOU SHOULD NEVER TRY TO SWIM OUT AND SAVE SOMEONE. CALL 999 AND ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD STATING WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.
