Legal advice

The council’s Legal department acts on behalf of and provides legal advice to the council, not members of the public.

This is therefore not a service that is provided by the Council.

If you require legal advice or an advocate you should contact your own solicitor, the Citizens Advice Bureau or the Community Legal Service.

The aim of the Community Legal Service is to ensure that people can get information and advice about their legal rights and help with enforcing them.

Community Legal Service Direct is an online service that provides free information, help and advice direct to the public on a range of common legal problems, on this website you will be able to:

  • Look for a local legal adviser or solicitor
  • Ask a question or choose a common topic and link to the right place on the best advice sites in the UK
  • See if you are eligible for legal aid using an online calculator
  • View or print legal information leaflets
  • Read the text of recorded messages about common legal problems
