808 State at Scarborough Open Air Theatre

Open Air Theatre ScarboroughThe Manchester band behind one of the most seminal chillout anthems of the 1980s will perform at Scarborough Open Air Theatre this summer.

We can announce that 808 State, whose top-10 hit ‘Pacific State’ is instantly recognisable almost a quarter of a century later, will support Happy Mondays at the theatre on Saturday 22 June.

Formed in 1987, Mixmag says 808 State “sketched the blueprint for British techno as we know it”. They went on to have other notable successes, with The Only Rhyme That Bites (with MC Tunes), Tunes Splits The Atom, In Yer Face and Cubik / Olympic all charting well.

The band’s highest charting UK album, ‘Ex-el’, which included guest vocals from Bernard Sumner and Björk, peaked at a lofty number four.

Janet Deacon, Area Director for Welcome to Yorkshire, which is supporting this year’s line-up at the theatre in association with National Holidays, said:

"808 State were electronica pioneers and over their career have amassed an army of followers. We’re absolutely thrilled they will be joining Happy Mondays on the same stage in Scarborough on 22 June."
