Fly the flag for Yorkshire
The white
rose flag of Yorkshire will be raised at Scarborough Town Hall on 1
August – Yorkshire Day – it has been announced.
The flag will be hoisted at 9am in a
ceremony which residents and visitors are welcome to attend and
will remain flying above the Town Hall for the duration of “A
Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough” which continues until 5
August.
During the Yorkshire Day ceremony,
Scarborough Town Crier Alan Booth MBE will read the traditional
Yorkshire Declaration.
Matthew Joseph, who is the chairman of the
steering group behind “A Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough”,
said: “It would be brilliant to see residents and businesses in the
Scarborough borough get into the spirit of Yorkshire Day and the
festival in general by flying the Yorkshire flag with pride.
“Yorkshire flags of all shapes and sizes
are available to buy from tourist information centres in
Scarborough and Filey and it would be great to see them in shop
windows and flown from homes and businesses.”
A Festival of Yorkshire, supported by
Welcome to Yorkshire, is being co-ordinated by Scarborough Borough
Council and the Scarborough Urban Area Forum in association with a
number of partners which include The Yorkshire Society, Scarborough
Museums Trust, Scarborough Spa, Scarborough Castle, the Woodend
Creative Industries Centre, Crescent Arts, Scarborough Library and
Information Centre, the town’s Market Hall and Vaults and Yorkshire
Treasure Trails.
It coincides with Yorkshire Day after
Scarborough was invited by The Yorkshire Society to host the main
civic gathering which will see mayors, chairmen and other
dignitaries from across the region gather to celebrate their pride
in Yorkshire.
The first day of “A Festival of Yorkshire –
Scarborough” sees the opening of a David Hockney exhibition at the
Woodend Creative Centre in The Crescent; a special flat cap Frisbee
golf day at Scarborough Castle, the first day of a Made in
Yorkshire exhibition at Scarborough Spa; a free Yorkshire concert
by the world-famous Spa Orchestra; free entry to Yorkshire folk
visiting The Rotunda and Scarborough Art Gallery; free entry to
Filey Museum; free organised walks in Filey; and Terrarium, Dance
in a Bubble, at Wykeham Abbey in the evening as part of the North
York Moors National Park’s 60th anniversary
celebrations.

Flying
notes
Did you know, the way you
fly the Yorkshire flag depends on which part of Yorkshire you are
from? If you are from the West or North Riding of Yorkshire you
should fly the flag with the white petal pointing upwards and if
you are from the East Riding then you should fly the flag with the
central green leaf at the top.
