Peasholm Park centenary weekend
The countdown has
begun for a big weekend of centenary celebrations in Scarborough’s
Peasholm Park.
Linda Harper, chairman of the Peasholm Park
Friends group said: “This weekend will mark a very special
milestone in the history of the park and I’m delighted with the
entertainment we have lined up to celebrate.”
Scarborough Borough Council Community
Involvement Officer, Helen Percival, added: “Peasholm Park has a
special place in the hearts of many people in Scarborough and
beyond. I hope the weekend’s celebrations will be enjoyed by many
hundreds of people.”
The official centenary of Peasholm was
officially marked today (Tuesday) when the Mayor of the Borough of
Scarborough, Cllr Helen Mallory, planted an oak tree in the
park.
Celebrations continue on Friday from 8pm
with a concert from the bandstand in the park performed by the
world-famous Scarborough Spa Orchestra, which is also celebrating
is 100th year.
The Mugenkyo Taiko Dojo drumming group’s
moment to shine is at the Falsgrave Community Centre from 10am on
Saturday (23 June) when it hosts public drumming workshops. Places

From 6.30pm on Saturday, gates open in the
park ahead of a ‘Shadows in the Park’ concert featuring Shazam and
Shadows Music. Hosted by the Peasholm Park Friends with support
from Scarborough Borough Council’s parks service, the concert
starts at 7.30pm. Admission is £8 for adults, with entrance free to
under 16s who are accompanied by an adult.
The big centenary event on Sunday 24 June
from 10am and continuing throughout the day is free and will see
performances from The Staxton Singers, Scandinavian marching bands,
the Mugenkyo Taiko Dojo drumming group, Chinese Lion Dancers,
martial arts displays and storytelling, a willow weaver, circus
skills and arts and crafts stalls.
