Armed Forces Day 2012 - business shows its support
Businesses in Scarborough
have been showing their support for Armed Forces Day which takes
place on the town’s seafront on Saturday (23 June).
Veterans and serving Armed Forces personnel
will be able to get to activities on the Foreshore in style thanks
to the town’s Central Tramway Company. The operators of the cliff
lift linking Marine Parade on the north side of the Grand Hotel in
the town centre to the beach, are offering free lift travel for
forces personnel and veterans on production of badges or medals
during Armed Forces Day. The usual cost of a journey is 75p in each
direction.
Meanwhile, Scarborough Shopmobility is
extending its opening hours from 9am to 6.30pm to ensure veterans
with mobility difficulties can enjoy a full day of activities. If
people want to make use of the free hire service for that day, they
are being asked to book in advance by calling 01723 369910, stating
they are a veteran. They will also need to take some form of
“veteran” identification, such as service number or badge, before a
mobility vehicle can be hired out.
The Scalby Manor Restaurant in Burniston
Road is “supporting our servicemen and women” with Free meals For
The Forces between 25 and 30 June. Anyone currently serving, or who
has a veteran’s lapel badge will be treated to a free carvery meal
or breakfast on production of a voucher which can be downloaded by

Builders Jewsons are also donating sandbags
and the use of a HIAB which is required to lift a two man Gazelle
helicopter off a transporter on Armed Forces Day, while Boyes has
provided material which will be used to dress the formal area in
front of St Nicholas Gardens, as well as goodie bag items for a
“Treasure Our Troops Treasure Hunt” which also takes place on
Saturday.
Scarborough Borough Council Culture
Officer, Rowena Marsden, who organises the event said: “I want to
publicly express out gratitude to those businesses that have come
forward to support Armed Forces Day in Scarborough – their kindness
and generosity will make a big difference.”
Scarborough Armed Forces Day will be the
Naval Regional Commander’s keystone event in the North of England
this year and is expected to attract more than 15,000 people to the
town’s seafront.
Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Band Scotland
will entertain crowds with a 40-minute performance and the Royal
Navy will also be bringing their Royal Marines Fitness Challenge
and Climbing Tower to the event, as well as “Food for Life” healthy
cooking demonstrations.
The 4th Battalion The Yorkshire
Regiment – now the only detachment with a military base in
Scarborough – will also have an important presence on the seafront,
with a paintballing range, display tents and vehicles, while the
Ravens parachute team will be dropping in.
The Scarborough event will also feature
many other displays, parades, stalls and games and takes place a
week ahead of the national celebrations in Plymouth.
