Counting down to Olympic Flame arrival
With only four days
to go until the Olympic Flame arrives in the borough of Scarborough
on Monday 18 June, everyone involved in the organisation of the day
from Hinderwell in the north, to Filey in the south is working flat
out to ensure that the day is a success and the dream of making it
the borough’s moment to shine comes true.
Three more entertainment
events running alongside the route of the Olympic Torch Relay when
it passes through Scarborough have been announced this week.
Between 11.00am and 2.00pm there will be display skating at Hairy
Bobs Skate Park on Marine Drive with live music. There will
be an acoustic music performance at the bottom of St Nicholas Cliff
Gardens on Foreshore Road between 11.00am and 1.30pm. This
will be followed by another music performance at the top of the
gardens near the Queen Victoria statue once the Olympic Torch has
travelled along Foreshore Road, which will continue until about
3pm. This is so that people can continue to enjoy the party
atmosphere in the town centre after the Torch has departed for
Filey.
Rolling roadblocks will
still be in place for the majority of the Relay route through the
borough, but there will be two road closures in the interests of
public safety. Chubb Hill Road in Whitby will be closed to
all vehicular traffic (except the Torch convoy) from 9.00am until
11.00am. This road has been highlighted as an area that will
be particularly well supported by local schoolchildren.
Foreshore Road in
Scarborough, which is also expected to be a pinch point for crowds,
will be closed to all vehicular traffic (except the Torch convoy)
between 12.30pm and 3.00pm from the traffic lights with Eastborough
southwards towards Aquarium Top.
Andrew Williams, Scarborough
Borough Council’s Lead Officer for London 2012 inspired events
said:
“All the agencies involved
in the organisation of the day felt it was appropriate to close
these roads temporarily to ensure we can manage the safety of
crowds and the Olympic Torch Relay convoy. We are sorry for
the inconvenience this may cause some road users; alternative
routes will be signed and we will be looking to open the roads
earlier than we have advertised depending on the situation on the
day and progress of the Torch. We would advise any businesses
that rely on these roads for their own use or for deliveries, to
use the alternative routes and advise delivery companies where
necessary.”
