A Festival of Yorkshire – festival beer to be brewed
25 April 2012
An official beer will be brewed to accompany “A Festival of
Yorkshire – Scarborough” this summer, festival organisers can now
reveal.
Called “Ey Up”, the beer will be brewed at the North Riding brew
pub in North Marine Road – the current holders of Scarborough CAMRA
Town Pub of the Year award.
It will be served up throughout the five-day, Welcome to
Yorkshire supported festival, which begins on Yorkshire Day, 1
August.
The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr John Blackburn,
visited the pub – built in the 1850s – ahead of the start of the
brewing process.
Welcome to Yorkshire Area Director Janet Deacon said:
“Food and drink play an extremely important part in the
Yorkshire appeal. This event ties in nicely with Welcome to
Yorkshire’s ‘Delicious’ campaign, which includes finding
Yorkshire’s pub of the year. People can still vote for their
favourite at yorkshire.com/pub.”
North Riding landlord, Stuart Neilson, said: “We have built a
strong reputation for our real ales and we’re very proud of what we
do here. I’m confident our latest creation will be the perfect
accompaniment to ‘A Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough’. We were
privileged to be able to welcome the Mayor and I’m sure he will
enjoy the finished product.”
Matthew Joseph, chairman of the steering group behind “A
Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough” said: “We’re absolutely
delighted to have the North Riding pub on board and we’re really
looking forward to making an ale that reflects the personality of
Yorkshire – honest, straightforward and strong!”
A Festival of Yorkshire is being organised by Scarborough
Borough Council and the Scarborough Urban Area Forum as part of its
arts, culture and sport theme for 2012 in association with other
partners including The Yorkshire Society, Scarborough Museums
Trust, Scarborough Spa, Scarborough Castle, Woodend Creative
Industries Centre, Crescent Arts, Scarborough Library and
Information Centre, the town’s Market Hall and Vaults and Yorkshire
Treasure Trails.
It was decided to stage the festival around Yorkshire Day after
Scarborough was invited by the Yorkshire Society to host the main
civic gathering when more than 100 mayors, chairmen and other
dignitaries from across the region gather together to celebrate
their pride in Yorkshire and the region’s unique appeal.
The festival begins with the first day of a 24-day exhibition of
work at Woodend Arts and Craft Gallery by world-famous Yorkshire
artist David Hockney.
