Local supermarkets launch Drink Safe Stay Safe initiative
13 December
Scarborough Borough Council and North Yorkshire Police have been
working with local supermarkets to encourage members of the public
to drink safely over the festive season.
Customers purchasing any alcohol at Morrison’s, Proudfoots,
Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s will receive a specially designed receipt
holder which includes important information about recommended
limits, proxy purchasing and pre-loading. Seasonal posters giving
out key messages about drinking safely have also been produced and
will be displayed in the supermarkets.
Sandra Rees, Community Health and Safeguarding Officer for
Scarborough Borough Council said:
“We are very pleased to be working with our colleagues from the
supermarkets and especially delighted that they have agreed to work
with us in the longer term by getting key messages out to the
public.
“We are definitely not saying to people ‘do not drink’ but
please drink in moderation, stay safe and help prevent drink
related incidents.”
Research shows that people who drink at home often end up
drinking more than they realise - an open bottle is usually and
empty bottle.
Parents are also the main source of alcohol for 10 to 17 year
olds. Buying alcohol with the intention of allowing young people
under the age of 18 to consume it at your child’s birthday party or
social gathering, or for your child to take to the park to drink (
i.e. not under your supervision) is illegal.
Here are a few tips on how to have a good time as well as a
couple of drinks:
- Know your limit and stick to the recommended guidelines,
females should have no more than 14 units per week and males no
more than 21 units per week
- Sip drinks – this will save you money as you will buy
less!
- Skip a drink every now and again – alternate every alcoholic
drink with a soft drink
- Appoint a designated driver when going out
- Don’t mix drink with drugs, that includes many over the counter
cold and flu remedies
