Charities receive boost from Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day parade.Close to £4,000 will be given to three charities following Armed Forces Day in Scarborough.

The money was raised through bucket collections on the day, with a battalion of people coming forward to help out.

Cheques will be presented to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help, the Royal British Legion Scarborough Poppy Appeal and the RNLI at the “Night Before the Colours Dinner” at Scarborough Spa on 4 November.

Scarborough Borough Council Leader and chairman of the steering group which organised Armed Forces Day, Cllr Tom Fox, said: “It’s a fantastic amount of money and reflects the high esteem in which these three charities and their work are held in.

“I want to thank everyone who contributed, as well as the dozens of volunteers who gave up their time during Armed Forces to be collectors, or act as marshals and stewards.

“The day would not have been the success it was without those volunteers coming forward to help out on the day and they can feel rightly proud of the part they played.

“I also recognise the contribution made by businesses in Scarborough, both in financial terms and practical terms with many putting up posters in their windows to advertise Armed Forces Day, as well as the local media who once again got behind Armed Forces Day, giving the event some incredible coverage, before, during and after.”

Thousands of people are thought to have headed to the Foreshore for the Scarborough’s third annual Armed Forces Day on 25 June, with a display by The Blades aeronautical team definitely among the highlights.

Crowds also enjoyed a veteran veterans’ parade along the seafront, as well as marching bands and a host of stalls, events and activities aimed at all the family.

This year’s Armed Forces Day was hosted and organised by Scarborough Borough Council, in partnership with the Heroes Welcome initiative, South Bay Traders Association, Royal British Legion, SSAFA Forces Help and the RNLI, with financial support from local businessman Don Robinson’s Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience in London, the Ministry of Defence and the borough council.
