The secret is out…it’s going ahead!
12 July

Scarborough’s Secret Wood event is back this year and looking to
be bigger and better than ever.
This special activity day will be held on 17 September from 10am
until 4pm by the Friends of Raincliffe Woods. It will be the first
time the full Secret Wood event has been held since 2008.
Town Crier, Alan Booth will open the event and Last of the
Summer Wine actor Ken Kitson will be there all day signing
autographs, selling copies of his new book and talking about his
new adventures.
Exhibitions will include chainsaw sculpting, heavy horse
logging, a Celtic re-enactment at the Round House and falconry from
Park Rose Birds of Prey.
Children will be able to enjoy story-telling puppets from the
Tales from the Heartland Group, as well as bird-box making with
Scarborough in Bloom and face painting.
Scarborough Borough Council’s Parks and Countryside team, who
used to run the event before funding restrictions, will also be
there promoting recycling and energy saving.
Other exhibitors are Natural England, Scarborough Conservation,
the Hawk and Owl Trust, a dry-stone waller and an artist
blacksmith.
Friends of Raincliffe Woods Chair, John Bradley is excited about
the event:
“It will be a brilliant family day and we’re so pleased that we
have been able to run it. We’re trying to make the event as big as
possible, and we’ve already had a lot of interest from right across
Yorkshire.
“I would like to thank everybody who has been involved in
putting this day together, especially the exhibitors as many are
coming for free.
“Big thanks also go to Community Environment Assistant Sheila
Johnson, and Alan Tomlinson as well as all the other Parks and
Countryside staff who have helped.”
Transport cannot be provided due to high costs, but free parking
will be provided in a field next to the event.
The event will be free for all, though donations to the Friends
Group would be much appreciated so that they can continue to run
these events in future.
