Friarage schoolchildren discover new castle
Children from
Friarage Community School were invited to Castle Dykes to have a
first look at the new adventure play area that is being
constructed.
The group of children, who have all been
members of the Friarage School Council, were first asked in the
autumn of 2010 to come up with ideas for the new naturalistic play
area. Now that construction work has started the children had been
asked to go along and see their ideas take shape.
The new play area, which has been funded by
the Government Playbuilder Scheme, Scarborough Borough Council and
Yorkshire Coast Homes will be an imaginative play feature with a
pirates and castles theme that complements Scarborough Castle next
door. It will have a boat beached on rocks and an agility course
leading up to a wooden fort – and there are plans to develop some
willow features with a local artist.
County Councillor Janet Jefferson, North
Yorkshire Play Champion and chairman of the Scarborough Borough
Play Partnership said: “I am very pleased with the way the new play
area is shaping up – when complete it is going to be a great place
for families to visit.
“I would like to thank the project funders,
the Playbuilder Scheme, Scarborough Borough Council and Yorkshire
Coast Homes for helping to turn a sad neglected play area into this
new exciting facility. I would also like to thank the children from
Friarage Community School whose ideas have helped to create this
new play area.”
Work on the play area started at the
beginning of June and is due to be completed by the end of
July.
Construction of the fort has started, work
to the agility course is almost finished, and the last piece to go
in will be the boat and surrounding rocks.
The boat, which is an old fishing coble,
has been donated from Whitby Harbour and requires some
attention.
The children from Friarage School will also be helping to give
the boat a lick of paint once it has been installed and will be
running a competition among their classmates to give it a new
name.
