Make a date for Race For Life

Cancer Research UK Race For Life logoWomen in the Scarborough area are being urged to make a date to help beat cancer by saving Sunday 8 May in their diaries to take part in Tesco and Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

Organisers of the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series have just confirmed the Scarborough date for 2011 – and with it a brand new seaside venue.

Following feedback from participants and close collaboration with Scarborough Borough Council, the 5km event is now moving from Oliver’s Mount to North Promenade seafront, starting and finishing at the Sealife Centre.

This means more women can now take part in Race for Life, as the new venue will allow for more than 4,000 participants – almost double than previous years. And with the event now taking place in heart of Scarborough it is hoped more people will come along and support the event by taking part, volunteering and cheering on their friends and family.

Claire Wase, Race for Life event manager for Scarborough, said: “We are asking Scarborough women to mark Sunday 8 May, 2011, in their diaries and invite their mums, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues to take part with them.

“Race for Life has an unforgettable atmosphere with local women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness abilities coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer.  They motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5km, with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.

“It is going to be even more exciting bringing Race for Life to the beautiful Scarborough seafront, giving it an extra special quality for those taking part.

“The website opens for entries on Monday 17 January but it’s really important that local women ring the date in their calendars now and make a note that the venue is different to last year.”

One-in-three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives.  But the good news is that more people are beating the disease than ever before. Cancer Research UK’s work is at the heart of that progress.

Women in Yorkshire can enter Race for Life from Monday 17 January at www.raceforlife.org or by calling 0871 641 1111.
