Purse Thefts in Borough

Safer Communities Partnership logoIn recent weeks the number of thefts of purses in Scarborough has increased.  The thefts are mainly occurring in town centre shops and supermarkets when shoppers are leaving purses visible in open handbags or on shopping trolleys.

Similar thefts are also taking place in Whitby, Filey and Eastfield areas of the Borough.

North Yorkshire Police and the Safer Community Partnership have joined together to produce a leaflet, which is been distributed to shops by the Town Anti-Theft Group, warning shoppers of the danger of leaving a purse in sight.

Sergeant Jacqui Raynor, Problem Solving Sergeant, said:

“By making yourself more aware of your property and what is on show, you can help to make a large reduction in crime.  Look after your money as it is better in your pocket than someone else’s.”

Barry Graham, Crime Reduction and Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator, added:

“Crime across the Borough is continuing to reduce, however we continue to monitor trends and are concerned at the rise in the theft of purses.  We would encourage shoppers to take more care when they are out shopping by ensuring purses are kept out of sight and secure.”
