Whitby Marina Go-ahead

A view of Whitby, out towards Whitby AbbeyOn 14 October Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet gave the green light to a proposed new marina facility in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

The scheme, costing nearly £1 million, will contain state of the art toilet, shower and laundry facilities for marina users as well as public toilets.  Drawing upon the best of internal marina design from around the country, the external design has used the historical architecture in Whitby as its basis and it is proposed to use traditional organic materials such as stone, timber and glass in a classic shape, characterised by the recurring arch features found around the town.

In their report, David Archer the council's Strategic Director and John Riby, Head of Technical Services, sought councillors’ approval to seek public comment on the design and to approve the engagement of contractors to help develop and deliver the scheme.  Subject to these aspects, the officers proposed to prepare a scheme for a planning application in January 2009.

Cllr Herbert Tindall, Cabinet Member for Harbours was pleased with the decision and said:

“When implemented, it will put Whitby at the forefront of marina facilities and will build upon the town's growing reputation for quality and service delivery.  We have worked with the Whitby groups to make sure it is what they want.  It is their design and they have been very constructive to the architects in their suggestions.”

Cllr Jane Kenyon, Cabinet Member and councillor representing Whitby’s Mayfield award, was encouraged by the support which the scheme had received and felt that it was what Whitby needed following the disappointment of the previous proposals which, she felt, had received a resounding 'thumbs down' from the public of Whitby.

Diana Jeuda, the Chairperson for some of the focus groups that have helped in the preliminary design, and a main protagonist against a previous proposal, which received widespread objections, attended and addressed the meeting.  She said:

“This is a very exciting project.  The marina facilities proposed will give us something to be really proud of.  The building itself is also exciting and it sits well with the architecture of Whitby.  I am pleased that the town has got a lot of time to think about it and the council is making a real effort to make the information about it available as widely as possible.”

Cllr Tom Fox, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council thanked Ms Jeuda and her colleagues for their help in getting the scheme to the current stage and added:

“It represents how the various communities across the Borough are now working together towards delivering the renaissance of the North Yorkshire coast.”

Whitby Town Council gave its backing in principle to the scheme last week, describing it as potentially 'exciting'.  A public exhibition of the proposals will be held in Whitby Tourist Information Centre from 20 October for a week and there will be two presentations in the Whitby Coliseum on Wednesday 22 October.
