Whitby sewage pollution on the agenda

A view of Whitby AbbeyScarborough Borough Council is convening a special meeting of the Projects and Partnerships Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday 15 October at 2pm at Sneaton Castle Centre, Whitby.

The meeting has been arranged in response to serious concerns about the capability and robustness of Yorkshire Water’s sewerage infrastructure in Whitby to cope with demands, following several recent incidents of sewage pollution in Whitby Harbour and surcharging of sewers in Mulgrave Road in the town.

It is hoped that the meeting will help to establish why and how these incidents happened, and what action Yorkshire Water is taking to prevent them happening again.

The council’s overview and scrutiny function is there to champion the whole community, and to hold not only the council, but also other public agencies to account.  Representatives of Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and the local highway authority (North Yorkshire County Council) have all been invited to the meeting.

Members of the public are invited to ask questions at the meeting, after the councillors have had the opportunity to ask their questions.  Any individual question is limited to a maximum of two minutes speaking time.

A maximum of 15 minutes for public questions will be allowed in total.  If you would like to ask a question, please submit your question in writing, including your contact details, by 5pm on Monday 13 October at the latest.  Please send questions to Lynn Mellor, Legal and Support Services, Scarborough Borough Council, Town Hall, St Nicholas Street, Scarborough, YO11 2HG or email:  lynn.mellor@scarborough.gov.uk.
