Sustainable Development
Sustainable development/sustainability is about meeting the
needs of the present without comprising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs. It’s about ensuring a
better quality of life for all, both for today and in the
future.
Sustainability is about looking through the
lens of our children, thinking about what the world will be like
when they are our age, and thinking how our impacts will affect
their future.
Sustainability is about ensuring that the
earth’s resources (e.g. metals, minerals, coal, oil, and gas) are
used wisely and our environment such as land, water and air
(which are also resources) on which we depend is looked
after now so that our's and our children’s quality of life is
not compromised by our own actions.
What changes, for example, can we all
(council's, individuals, communities, businesses) make to help
ensure it is a bright one for us as well as for them?
This means sustainability should be incorporated into all of our
services and activities that can affect the quality of life of our
residents.
