As a true Scarborian, born and bred, I have to pinch myself at the fantastic things that have been happening to my home town in the last few years. It has created a real feel good factor that is tangible right across the town.

Cllr Derek Bastiman

Urban Renaissance

The transformation of an area through investment in the built environment and through initiatives which are designed to support economic and social regeneration, with a particular emphasis on delivering major public realm and economic regeneration projects of a high quality.

The Urban Renaissance Initiative is a partnership approach to supporting the social and economic regeneration of a number of towns in Yorkshire.

The Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, has agreed to invest £6million in major projects that will help change the image and appearance of Scarborough over the next few years. Contributions from the Borough Council, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Heritage Lottery Fund and the private sector will quadruple the level of investment.

The Renaissance process is all about the Council, the local community, private sector and other key stakeholders working in partnership to improve the town. In the last few years, hundreds of people have committed thousands of hours to drawing up plans for the future of Scarborough and identifying the priority projects that will make a real difference to the local economy.

The people involved in the process have been directly involved in making decisions about how to allocate the substantial funds set aside by the Borough Council, Yorkshire Forward, the European Union and other external funding agencies to support the regeneration of Scarborough.

Over the next two years a number of major projects championed by Scarborough's Urban Renaissance Group will be delivered.

These include: refurbishing Scarborough's Grade II listed Spa exhibition and entertainment complex, the development of a Creative Industries Centre at Wood End, the redevelopment of the Rotunda Museum, environmental improvements to Sandside & creation of new marina berths and a proposed expansion of the Scarborough Business Park near Eastfield.

For detailed information on these projects, please visit the Project Development Page.

A number of projects are starting this year and we have seen the completion of the first renaissance project - the transformation of the former South Bay Pool into an award winning Star Map and performance space, designed in conjunction with the local astronomical society.
