As a true Scarborian, born and bred, I have to pinch myself at the fantastic things that have been happening to my home town in the last few years. It has created a real feel good factor that is tangible right across the town.

Cllr Derek Bastiman

Swing Bridge

Whitby swing bridge provides the link between the upper and lower harbour areas and the east and west side of the town.

Whitby Swing BridgeWhitby's swing bridge, straddling the River Esk

Whitby swing bridge is manned for two hours either side of high water and works strictly to the tide tables produced by the Whitby Harbour Office.

While on duty the bridgemen maintain a listening watch on VHF channels 11 and 16.

Openings

The bridge openings are on the hour and half hour on request on VHF channel 11.  The first opening will be as soon as is practicable two hours before high water and the final opening will be 10 minutes prior to the two hours after high water. e.g. if high water is 10.35 the first available bridge will be 08.45 and the last available bridge will be 12.25

Extra Openings

Extra openings are made during the summer season in negotiation with the Whitby Boating Association and Whitby Yacht Club.  Please see notices around harbour for list of openings and document below.
