Lighting - Street Lights
The local authority is responsible for maintenance and repairs
of street lights, and lighting faults including illuminated
bollards, signs and beacons.
The Borough Council maintains the highway network within
the urban area of Scarborough which includes Scalby, Osgodby,
Eastfield and Crossgates. This function is carried out under an
agency agreement with North Yorkshire County Council.
We maintain all street lights and illuminated traffic signs in
Scarborough. We also maintain some street lights in Whitby town and
some or all in the majority of the Parish's within the
Borough.
A large proportion of street lights and all illuminated traffic
signs outside of Scarborough are, however, maintained by North
Yorkshire County Council. Some street lights in Filey Town and a
small number of the Parish's are the direct responsibility of the
Town or Parish Council.
Reporting a Faulty Street Light
You can report a faulty street light or traffic sign by
telephone to 0800 083 6230 (free phone) or in person at the Town
Hall, St Nicholas Street or at the Council offices at Skinner
Street, Whitby. Alternatively, you can fill in our
online form.
Please provide the following information when you report
a fault to help us ensure we attend the correct unit:
- The road name and the town or village name
- The number painted on the lamp column and/or the number/name of
the property nearest to it.
Our aim is to attend and repair where possible all reported
lighting faults within 5 working days. Emergencies such as a
missing door on a column leaving exposed live
wires or when a column has been damaged in a road
traffic accident will attended and dealt with as soon as
possible.
You can report any lighting fault details within the
Borough to us using the above methods. We will ensure the report is
passed onto the correct authority if the lighting unit concerned is
not our responsibility.
