Council represented on all party parliamentary group
30 April 2012
In a bid to boost the future economic fortunes of the North
Yorkshire coastal region, Scarborough Borough Council has become
involved with the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for
Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. The APPG has been formed to
bring MPs of all parties together with key leaders from local
government, private sector and social enterprise to help maximise
future investment and sustainable economic growth in the
region.
Its purpose is to leave party politics aside and agree positive
positions, actions and commitments, shared by all of its
membership, to inform and influence decision makers in Government
and beyond on the big issues that will ensure the different areas
of the region fulfil their growth potential.
The council has been very keen to represent the borough on the
APPG with a view to maximising economic benefits for local
communities and businesses. Two of the themes that the APPG will be
focusing on, renewable energy and tourism and culture, are
particularly relevant to the borough’s future economic growth and
therefore the council’s involvement will be key to ensuring the
potential of these industries is maximised.
The group’s work on renewable energy is set to start next month
and the council is looking forward to influencing these
discussions.
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet
Member for Strategic Planning and Regeneration explained:
“Our borough is already well down the road to securing
investment in the off-shore wind industry so this particularly
piece of work is a very good match for us. The APPG is looking to
further explore the direct opportunities offered by the industry as
well as the knock on effect it will have in terms of its supply
chain and servicing needs. The work will include looking at any
barriers to investment so that clear actions can be agreed to
unlock growth.
“One of the strengths of the group is that political differences
are set aside and a united voice formed to keep the momentum moving
forwards. It’s about working together to support the businesses and
industries that have the potential to generate economic growth and
create thousands of jobs both locally and across our region.”
