Services affected by adverse weather and power cut

4 April 2012
Update 11.30am: Whitby
Leisure Centre is now open.
Refuse and recycling collections in the Whitby area will be
affected today due to a combination of weather and power
failures.
There is no snow in Whitby town centre so collections should be as
normal providing we can fuel our collection vehicles (see paragraph
below). There is snow in the rural areas around Whitby and
this may affect collections where icy conditions prevail.
The current power cut in the Whitby area, which is reportedly
affecting over 15,000 properties, means that fuel stations in the
area are unable to pump fuel. To refuel our collection
vehicles we will have to travel to fuel stations outside the
affected area and this will add a time delay to our
collections.
We are hoping that the energy company will be able to resolve the
power issues in the next few hours, but if it continues for any
length of time, we may be unable to complete some collection rounds
today.
Northern Powergrid is providing the following advice for any
customers that are being directly affected by the power
cut:
- Contact Northern Powergrid’s power cut
helpline on 0800 66 88 77 (Northeast customers) or 0800 375 675
(Yorkshire customers) anytime night or day if your power supply has
been affected
- If you have a battery-powered radio, tune it
into the local radio station for updates
- Turn off electrical appliances at the
socket. This is particularly important for heating or cooking
appliances as your power could return at any time and potentially
cause a safety hazard if you are absent, asleep or
unaware
- Keep one light switched on so that you know
when electricity has returned
- Check on any vulnerable neighbours and
relatives to make sure they are comfortable and well
- If you have access to an alternative source
of heating, try to keep one room warm and stay in it. If you do not
have an alternative source of heat, wrap up warm and have a blanket
at hand
- Use battery-powered lamps or torches if
possible instead of candles as they are safer
- Only call 999 in the event of an emergency
