Free soil improver...come and get some!

Soil improver giveaway.26 March

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to your garden waste, now is the time to see for yourself. Scarborough Borough Council, in partnership with Yorwaste, is launching a massive soil improver giveaway.

The big three day event starts next week and will see a total of 60 tonnes of soil improver given out across three events in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

The soil improver is the end result of the composting process at the Seamer Carr Resource Recovery Centre, which uses the garden waste collected within the borough via the brown bin and biodegradable sack scheme.

All residents need to do is bring along some sturdy bags or containers to one of the following events:

  • Monday 2 April 2012 at Whitby West Cliff car park, between 4pm and 6pm
  • Tuesday 3 April 2012 at Filey Country Park car park, between 4pm and 6pm
  • Wednesday 4 April 2012 at Scarborough Burniston Road car park, between 4pm and 6pm

Harry Briggs, from Scarborough Borough Council's Recycling & Waste Enforcement Unit said:

“With summer just around the corner, now is a perfect time for people to be getting back out in their gardens and exercising their green fingers. What better way to help than with some top-quality free soil improver?

"We always look forward to these events as we are giving back to the community soil improver that they have produced from their own gardens. These events are always very popular, therefore we urge residents to get there quickly as the soil improver will be given out on a first-come-first-served basis. This event is a great way for us to say thank you to residents for their keen participation in the garden waste collection service and the recycling scheme as a whole.”

Nick Smith, Yorwaste East Coast Manager, added:

“The quality of soil improver we are able to produce is very high and this is down to the efforts of Scarborough borough residents, who ensure that the garden waste they leave for collection is not mixed with any other material.

“By taking advantage of the free soil improver offer people are effectively returning the garden waste to its source, which is an excellent example of closed loop recycling, and we hope as many people as possible take advantage of this offer.”
