IDeA Charter Award

Following an assessment in September,
Scarborough Borough Council is the first authority in North
Yorkshire to gain the IDeA Charter on Member Development and the
first district council in the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber
region to gain this award.
To meet the charter the council had to show it
met the five basic criteria:
- The council makes a commitment to member
development
- A strategic approach has
been adopted for member development
- A Member Learning and
Development Plan is in place
- Learning and development is
effective in building capacity
- The council promotes a
work/life balance and citizenship
The assessment team stated that they were,
“impressed by the enthusiasm and the extremely positive comments
expressed by councillors about their development,” and that there
had been “significant achievements accomplished by the council
during the past couple of years.”
Leader of the council, Councillor Tom Fox
commented:
"This charter reflects the clear commitment
the council and councillors have to our personal development.
We have a flexible, comprehensive programme of development and this
is reflecting in the increased confidence, knowledge and skills of
all members and how they make decisions and influence."
Democratic and
Administration Services Manager, Gill Wilkinson added:
“I am delighted with this
result which reflects the hard work that both members and officers
have put in to improve member training and development over the
past two years.”
