Schoolchildren attend Council

Children from Lythe Church of England Primary School will have a day to remember on 3 November when they attend Scarborough Borough Council's Full Council meeting.

Officers have arranged for the 13 pupils to meet Cllr Eileen Vickers, the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, and have a short tour of the Town Hall before they take their seats to watch the action of the full council meeting.

The schoolchildren, aged from 5 to 11 years, voted to attend a real council meeting in action after they had been elected by ballot to join the school council.  The headteacher contacted local councillor John Armsby, who asked the council’s Democratic team if they could assist.

Gill Wilkinson, Democratic and Administration Services Manager stated:

"All the meetings of the council are open to the public and we encourage everyone to attend.  As this school had contacted one of our councillors we wanted to make the day a bit special for the pupils and foster their interest in local democracy.”

Mrs Foord, Headteacher of Lythe Church of England Primary School added:

"The children on this year’s school council are so switched on and are so motivated it is lovely to see that they take their responsibilities very seriously.  The school council meets every Thursday and consists of 13 children, aged between 5 and 11 years.  They have a secretary and treasurer and have already held a non-uniform day as a fundraiser.  They recently visited the Court Leet at Danby Castle and really enjoyed the experience."
